About a year ago, Danos took some soil samples from our backyard in Brooklyn looking for new macrophages. He found one, sequenced it and it turned out to be unique! Because he discovered it, he gets the official naming rights and we chose to name it after our dog Kugel.
Unlike Kugel the dog, Kugel the macrophage has a 3’ overhang length of 10bp and a stunning CGGATGGTAA overhang sequence, which is pretty cool.

Kugel has been with the in-laws for the past two weeks while we were in Mexico.
It was so weird to be home for a week without the dog around. No need to get up early to take her out in the snow. No reason to rush home after work to feed her. No dog hair on the couch. No dog hair on my clothes. No shlepping around 50 pound bags of dog food. No need to pay a dog walker. No one stealing my pillow at 6am.
I missed her so much.
