Thoughts on iPad
I would order 4 of them immediately if it had a video camera + Skype/iChat.  Seriously.  I have many sets of parents, in-laws, and grandparents, all of whom hate their computers. The iPad is close to perfect for all of them, but sadly, video chat with the kids is the missing killer app.

It is likely not personally identifiable information yet. Apple's Tablet: The Ultimate Red Herring
Apple is often compared to and seen as competing with Microsoft and Google, but it’s not a great comparison.  While there’s obvious overlap, these three companies are diverging in major ways. Microsoft is going to continue to rule the corporate environment and will do quite well at it.  We use Google Apps at work and from personal experience, it has a shockingly long way to go to...

Let’s say I’m traveling from Lower Manhattan to the Upper West Side. Before I can get there, I must go through Midtown, which is halfway there. Once I’m in midtown, I have to travel again to the next halfway point between midtown and the Upper West.  Once I’m there, I have to travel to the next halfway point.  And then to the next halfway point. This sequence of going...

This evening I posted what I thought was the most creative idea I’ve had in quite a long time. I spent forever in Photoshop.  I expected hundreds or thousands of Likes and Reblogs.  Maybe even a stint on the Radar. It’s currently neck-and-neck with a quote about a folder on David’s desktop. Karp, I’d like to offer you a draw.

Support Haiti relief by buying Instapaper Pro...
instapaper: All of today’s (Wednesday’s) proceeds from Instapaper Pro are being donated to Doctors Without Borders (MSF) as part of the Indie+Relief program. You have half of the day left to buy. If you’ve been on the fence, what better reason to buy than to support a charity? You say that like supporting the developer who made it and getting a great product in return for your money...

I can’t even describe the roller coaster ride this week has been. It was just a couple years ago when we sat in a tiny little room and started imagining innovative new ways that non profit organizations could use mobile phone for communication, fund raising and advocacy.  Remember, there weren’t any organizations using text messaging at the time.  We were making it all up as we went...

History is Bound to Repeat Itself
I get secret joy out of watching people speculate about upcoming Apple products.  What amuses me is that people have a really hard time innovating themselves, and more importantly, a hard time believing that Apple can innovate. Of the thousands of predictions about the Tablet/iSlate, they pretty much all boil down to two possibilities: a MacBook running OS X without a keyboard or a large iPhone. ...

Using Fibonacci Numbers to Convert from Miles to... →
Take two consecutive Fibonacci numbers, for example 5 and 8. And you’re done converting. No kidding – there are 8 kilometers in 5 miles. To convert back just read the result from the other end - there are 5 miles in 8 km! Another example. Let’s take the consecutive Fibonacci numbers 21 and 34. What this tells us is that there are approximately 34 km in 21 miles and vice versa. (The exact...

The Truth About iPhone Screen Repair
My wife’s iPhone G3 screen shattered a couple weeks ago.  It was still usable, but tough to read the screen. I set out to fix / get it fixed.  What I found was so much misinformation that I just want to set the record straight. Here are your current options for fixing a screen: iPhone screen repair by Apple costs $199. A myriad of 3rd party vendors who will replace it for $100-$150. A...

I have a very varied audience for my blog.  My wife, geeky friends, colleagues, strangers, and my parents.  It’s actually quite hard to find good content that will be appealing to all the different audiences.
