PDF + Instapaper = huge! →
Have you ever come across a PDF that looked really interesting but you didn’t want to read it on your computer?  Happens to me all the time.  My preferred reading platform is Instapaper so I get really sad when it can’t download a really juicy pdf. Well tonight I discovered a really useful service offered by Adobe that will convert a PDF to HTML for accessibility purposes.  All the...

A Very Clever Way to Archive and Search Your Web...
Web server log files take up a lot of space.  So you zip up the old ones, but then what?  Archive them?  Where?  Your directories quickly get filled up and searching them is a pain.  They’re annoying to keep around but you never really want to delete them. I had a pretty clever idea last year that has been working great. Like many people, I use the UNIX utility logrotate to manage my log...

Fake Steve Canceled Operation Chokehold →
I’m pretty sad about this.  Not the fact that it was canceled, but the fact that the title both parses and interests to me.

Small Rant, Feel Free to Skip
My preferred airline is US Airways.  I started my frequent flyer account with them in 2000.  That’s TEN YEARS ago.  I’m not a much for affinity programs, but for some strange reason, I’ve been loyal to US Air for the past 10 years. Today I decided to redeem my points for the first time. “I’m sorry sir, but your points have all been frozen because you haven’t...

What would take longer to recreate from scratch:...
If all the data, code, servers, etc were completely wiped out, which would be harder to recreate: Google Maps or Facebook? Keep in mind that Google Maps has map, satellite, and street imagery of the entire world to regather, but Facebook has the cooperation of 350 million people who are all required to cooperate to join and rebuild the network.

Google Fails, Bing FTW?
I had my first total Google search failure today. I googled for “bloomberg ventures” but the site wasn’t found anywhere in the first 30 results. Maybe the venture fund doesn’t exist anymore?  It’s the only possible explanation… On a whim, I decided to google on Bing instead and voila! The first result was http://bloombergventures.com/ I wonder what would...
